Cultivation tips
Pleurotus is probably the quickest and easiest edible species to grow.  Different coloured varieties are available, but generally they all taste the same, with a strong texture.  Grain spawn is used to inoculate plastic bags containing pasteurised wheatstraw.  Polypropylene bags sgould be used for sterilisation since they are heat resistant.  The addition of microporous filter will greatly facilitate gas exchange during the spawn run which may be as quick as 10 days.  Sides of the bags are punctured/slashed when they are fully colonised and primordia become initiated at the areas exposed to air.  Bags should be kept misted thoughout the fruiting, with an overhead light source.  Oyster mushrooms do not require casing, although they may also be fruited from boxes.
