Lentinus edodes

Shiitake is a well known species, usually cultivated on hardwood logs and also sawdust blocks.  The mushrooms have great texture and are especially good in stir fry cooking. Shiitake is reported to be beneficial to health, and often used in Chinese herbal medicine.

Cultivation tips

Fruiting can be induced by high rainfall, watering or by soaking the logs for 36 hours in water pond.  Shocking the logs may also help inducing fruiting, e.g. striking them with a mallot, baseball bat etc.  This spring we had a lot of rainfall, and when I had moved the logs from one area of the garden to another, many mushrooms started to appear.
