Vibrio fischeri

Vibrio fischeri grown for 24 hours on Photobacterium sea water agar

Vibrio fischeri is a common marine organism and can routinely be isolated from fresh fish.  Under optimum growth conditions, it is a very brightly glowing species, and is about half as bright as luciferin light sticks.  Fish which has been decomposing for several days often acquires a greenish glow, which explains the glow-in-the dark fish fingers which have been reported in student fridges!
